Terms and Conditions

1) 100 entrants will be selected and mentored remotely by industry professionals in relation to their portfolio;
2) up to 30 of those 100 entrants (as judged by an independent panel) will be selected to attend a 5 day workshop prior to attending the Visa pour l’image festival; and
3) 5 of the 30 participants will be selected to: attend the Hamburg Portfolio review, receive a €2k grant and Canon product. Please see full terms and conditions herein.

ORGANISER AND SUBMISSION PLATFORM ADMINISTRATOR

1.  The Organiser is Canon Europa N.V. 59 Bovenkerkerweg, 1185 XB (“Organiser”) Any company, any subsidiary, partnership or other entity which from time to time is controlled by or is under common control of the Organiser hereinafter will be referred to as “Organiser Affiliate” and, Organiser and Organiser Affiliate together will be referred to as "Organiser Group".
2.  The Data processor, as administrator of the submission platform is Hypemarks, Inc. dba TINT incorporated,122 EastHouston St. San Antonio, TX 78258.
By entering this Canon Student Development Programme Competition (“Competition”) all Entrants are deemed to have agreed to be bound by these terms and conditions unless notified otherwise by the Organiser in writing.

ELIGIBILITY

3.  All entrants (“Entrants”) must:
  • be aged 18 and over at the date April 16th, 2023;
  • reside in the countries listed below and:

    1. have started or completed an education programme in the countries listed below during the academic year 2022-2023, or
    2. be engaged in internships by agencies or magazines within the same period; or
    3. be nominated/endorsed by professionals from the photographic industry

4.  Canon reserves the right to verify Entrants eligibility and admission by requesting a copy of your ID and either proof of your enrolment on a qualifying course/internship/agency, or for those entering under nomination by photographic industry professionals, a letter of recomendation from the endorsing professional.
5.  Participants who attended Module 2 or 3 of the 2022 Canon Student Development Programme are not eligible to enter and/or participate.
6.  Employees of the Organiser, its subsidiary companies, their families, agents and other parties directly involved with this Programme and the sponsorship are not eligible to enter.

FURTHER DETAILS ABOUT CANON STUDENT DEVELOPMENT PROGRAMME

SELECTION PROCESS

7.  After the Entry Period, an independent panel composed of Canon employees and external industry professionals will select 100 submissions for admission to the Canon Student Development Programme (“Programme”). Submissions will be assessed on narrative skill, authenticity, storyline, bio and overall quality of the portfolio.
8.  Eligible participants with the qualifying submissions will be selected and notified on the outcome of the review by May 5th 2023.
9.  Those selected will become “Participants” and will be admitted to the Programme. The Programme will comprise three separate modules, with a proportion of the Participants selected for subsequent stages by an independent panel as detailed herein under section 9 “Prize”.

PRIZE

10. The Programme will comprise three separate modules
  • Module 1: Virtual Portfolio Preparation Mentorships
    100 admitted Participants will be partnered with a professional mentor between 29th May – 30th June to support and refine their portfolio. Each Participant will be granted up to three one hour sessions. All sessions will be conducted virtually. 
  • Module 2: Workshop
    Following the concusion of module 1, up to 30 Participants will be selected in July to attend a 5 day workshop taking place between 2nd – 6th September 2023 in Girona (S) and Perpignan (F). During the workshop Participants will attend dedicated lectures, take part in group portfolio reviews, practical sessions, attend the Visa pour l’image Festival (“Festival”) and benefit from networking opportunities with representatives from the Imaging and Media industry.
  • Module 3: Hamburg Portfolio Review
    5 Participants will be selected in September and receive a 3 day trip to Hamburg (G) and granted a place at the Hamburg Portfolio Review taking place between 15th – 17th September 2023. During the event Participants will take part in portfolio reviews, and attend additional meetings with industry professionals. Following the event the 5 Participants will receive a €2k grant and up to €9k worth of Canon product(s).
    All Participants will be introduced to the relevant local country Canon organisation.
11.  Selected participants for modules 2 and 3 will be hosted by the Organiser. Organiser will provide return economy class travel tickets by air and/bus or train (when feasible), full board accommodation, meals (breakfast, lunch and dinner) and travel insurance (excluding theft or loss of valuables) for the duration of the stay as indicated in clause 9.
12.  For the avoidance of doubt, Organiser will not be responsible for organising any visas for any elements of the Prize, this is the sole responsibility of the Participant.
13.  The hospitality is intended for the participant only, the Organiser will not cover any other expenses than those above indicated.
14.  Participants must ensure they will be available during the aforementioned dates May 29th - September 17th 2023 if selected for any of the above modules. Canon cannot amend or change these dates.
15.  Canon may, at its discretion, include some participants from the previous year into this year’s module 2 intake of 30. This is only where they were unable to participate in module 2 last year due to extenuating circumstances.

HOW TO PARTICIPATE

16.  It is free to participate. To be in with a chance of being selected to participate in the Programme, Entrants are required to submit their portfolio (via URL (canon-europe.com/get-involved/student-development-programme/submit/) within the Entry Period. See clause 18 “Submission Requirements” for further details.
17.  Incomplete, invalid or inappropriate entries, or entries received after the Entry Period will not be eligible for participation in the Programme.
18.  Selected Participants will be requested to provide the following between May 5th and no later than May 14th, 2023:
  • Confirmation of attendance to the Programme;
  • Image of the passport and/or ID card for the purposes of verifying age
  • Student ID and/or Confirmation from the School/University (or agency/magazine internship) certifying the enrolment in the academic year 2022-2023.
In case Participants fail to confirm the attendance and/or do not provide the required documentation by May 14th, 2023, the term of eligibility to the Programme lapses and their place will be forfeited.
19.  The official and only language of the initiative is English, no translation services will be provided, Participants need an adequate proficiency in English to benefit from the Programme, the necessary tools and adequate skills to attend the digital online settings.

SUBMISSION REQUIREMENTS

20.  Entrants will need to submit a portfolio, comprising up to two stories/projects, each with a maximum of twenty (20) photographs, alongside a description of their project(s) in 200 words or less, a personal bio and image captions. All written materials should be supplied in English. Image files should be JPEGS, max 1500 DPI, 2000 px.

Additional supporting documentation, may also be submitted by entrants such as:
  • Motivation statement to attend the Programme;
  • A letter of recommendation from the Teacher/School/Agency/Magazine/Industry professional
21.  All photographs must be original and taken by the Entrant.
22.  The photographs submitted by the Entrant must not contain anything which may be considered in anyway illegal or that which infringe the rights of any third party, including intellectual property, moral or privacy rights; or
23.  The Organiser reserves the right to disqualify incomplete or illegible entries or which otherwise do not meet the above requirements.

WARRANTIES

24.  By submitting its entry, the Entrant warrants that:
  • Entrant is the sole author of the photographs;
  • Entrant is the owner of the proprietary rights in the photographs;
25.  The Organiser warrants that:
  1. It shall act within the scope of the rights granted under these Terms and Conditions;
  2. The Organiser may wish to use your name and selected images for the purposes of advertising, promotion and publicity for Canon, the Student Development Programme and other Canon education initiatives without additional compensation. In such case, the Organiser will contact the Participant to request Participant’s permission in accordance with the clause 31. Such permission may not be unreasonably withheld.

DISCLAIMER

26.  The Organiser reserves the right to refuse to honour any entry or to recover the full value of the Prize if it considers there has been an abuse or breach of the terms and conditions of this Competition.
27.  The Organiser shall not be liable for any loss, damage or injury of any nature howsoever caused, sustained by any participant under this competition. However, nothing in these rules shall have the effect of excluding or restricting Organiser liability for personal injury or death caused by the proven negligence of its employees or contractors.
28.  In the event of a dispute over interpretation or implementation of the rules on any matter related to the competition, the decision of the Directors of Organiser is final, and no correspondence will be entered.
29.  Any taxes or levies imposed by local government on an individual Participant as a result of such Participant’s participation in the Programme shall be compensated by the Organiser (or its local affiliated company, as applicable).
30.  The Organiser reserves the right to publish the name and country of the Participants or to publicise the prize giving presentation after the date of the Programme. If the Participant does not wish such details to be published, they must advise the Organiser at time of notification of the admission.
31.  Entrants also agree to be contacted by the Organiser and its delegates for the purposes of administrating the Competition or if the Organiser wishes to discuss any other use of the picture(s) submitted to the Competition.
32.  The Prize is non-transferable, and no cash or credit alternatives will be substituted for the Prize on offer. If the Prize (or any part thereof) offered is unavailable due to Force Majeure, the Organiser reserves the right to modify the Programme.
33.  The Organiser shall not be in breach of these terms and conditions nor liable for delay in performing, or failure to perform, any of its obligations under these terms and conditions if such delay or failure result from events, circumstances or causes beyond its reasonable control including but not limited to fire, floods, pandemic (including, but not limited to as a result of or linked whether directly or indirectly to Covid-19), embargoes, war, acts of war (whether war be declared or not), acts of terrorism, insurrections, riots, civil commotions, strikes, lockouts or other labour disturbances, acts of God or acts, omissions or delays in acting by any governmental authority (“Force Majeure”).
34.  Any rejected or not confirmed admission may be offered to other Entrants at the absolute and sole discretion of the Organiser.

PERSONAL DATA

35.  Canon Europa N.V., 59 Bovenkerkerweg, 1185 XB is the Data Controller in respect of any personal data supplied by Entrants. The personal data provided is held securely and may be transferred on a secure server outside the EEA.
36.  Hypemarks, Inc. dba TINT incorporated,122 EastHouston St. San Antonio, TX 78258 is the Data processor and they administer the submission platform.
37.  The personal data collected from Entrants is subject to the Canon Consumer Privacy Policy https://myid.canon/canonid/#/policy.

JURISDICTION

38.  These Terms and Conditions and any disputes arising out of or in connection with them shall be governed by and construed in accordance with the laws of the Netherlands and will be subject to the non-exclusive jurisdiction of the Amsterdam courts.
